Truro Trojans have been going from strength to strength since the third lockdown at the
beginning of the year. Club membership levels are at an all time high – with over 40
members being on the books, and sessions regularly have 30 people attending.
Since returning to sport in April, the Trojans have taken part in two local tournaments which
are part of the newly developed Cornish Touch Rugby League. This league is held in
partnership with Falmouth Touch and Bodmin Ladies and is a pioneering event, designed to
promote touch rugby across Cornwall. The first leg of this league was held on the 30 th April
at Falmouth RFC. Over 60 players took part and the team of 10 Trojans played fantastically –
with many playing their first games for the club – the team dominated the evening, not only
winning every single game but also the tournament too!
We continued our winning streak at the second tournament of the league, on the 28 th May
which was hosted at Truro RFC. Over 100 players took part, from a variety of teams
including Falmouth Touch, Bodmin Ladies, Truro Medics and FXU Raiders. The Trojans
fielded three teams – over thirty players! – and did fantastically, with two of our teams
reaching the finale. The final was a tight affair and resulted in a 2-2 draw, well done to all
The Trojans have also been playing further afield this season and have taken part in the
South West Saxons Regional Tournaments which have been held in Exmouth and
Chippenham respectively. These tournaments have been a step-up for the Trojans, with
players playing two, forty minutes of touch against some fierce and well-established
competitors. Whilst we are yet to win a game in these tournaments, the team did incredibly
well and have scored numerous tries in both tournaments. As a result of their
performances, members of the team have also been invited to represent the South West
Saxons – which is the regional touch team. This is the first step in getting recognised by
England. A huge congratulations to the following players:
Kevin Kendall, who has been selected to represent the South West Saxons Men’s 40’s and
will be going to the Masters’ Nationals in August!
The following players have been selected as members of the wider squad for the South
West Saxons Men’s Open team:
The men will be attending two training sessions for the Saxons and will be trialling to earn
their place in the Saxons Men’s Open Team that will be playing at the Open’s Nationals. Best
of luck to these players and fingers crossed they are selected for the playing squad.
Scarlet Cox, Emilly Davies and Pip McKay have also all been invited to attend training for the
Saxons Women’s Open team, this will be an excellent opportunity for them to put their
markers down for a place in next year’s squad.
Finally, Lexie Williams has recently started her role as Assistant Coach for the England
Women’s Open Touch Rugby team and has attended two High Performance Camps up in
Oxford. Lexie will be the assistant coach for the Women’s Open up to and including the
Touch World Cup in 2023. Lexie has also been asked to take up the role of Assistant Coach
for the South West Saxons Women’s Open team for this Regional cycle.
Well done to everyone involved and we’re looking forward to seeing where the Trojans go
