Truro RFC

29 - 26

(HT 17-7)

Paignton RFC Limited
Truro maintained their impressive home form with a hard-fought victory over Devon rivals Paignton in an eventful contest at St Clement’s Hill.
The hosts flew out of the blocks, opening the scoring after just five minutes when Luis Powell crossed following excellent forward work from a rolling maul. Liam Wilson added the conversion, and Truro quickly doubled their lead as captain Dan Head finished off another powerful forward drive to make it 12–0.
Paignton responded with a converted try to narrow the gap to 12–7, but Truro had the final say of the half when Sam Blake touched down in the corner to send the home side into the break 17–7 ahead.
The first half was packed with drama, including a red card for Paignton and yellow cards for two Truro players.
Paignton came out strongly after the restart, scoring and converting within four minutes to reduce the deficit to 17–14. Truro’s backs then produced a slick move to set up Harri Metcalfe for his first try of the season, stretching the lead to 22–14.
The visitors refused to go away, scoring again to make it 22–19 before a further converted try saw them take the lead for the first time at 26–22.
Truro showed tremendous resolve in the closing stages. Dan Head powered over for his second try of the afternoon, and Metcalfe calmly slotted the conversion to seal a thrilling 29–26 win for the home side.
Truro travel to Plymstock Oaks next Saturday, 24 January.
